With back-to-school season in full swing, we wanted to take a moment to highlight (pun intended) one particularly colorful type of writing instrument that’s sure to be on many students’ must-have lists: highlighters!

While most students have used a highlighter at some point in their academic career and some may even have a favorite color that they like to use (blue, anyone?), they might not know just how useful these tools can be. The following are just some of the ways in which highlighters can be a real asset when studying, note-taking, and beyond. (1)

  • Time Savers – Highlighters not only allow you to extract the most informative parts of a long text, but they also help you save time in the future by knowing exactly where you left off in your reading/research.
  • Improve the Quality of Your Notes – By highlighting the most important bits of each paragraph and then using that info to take your own notes, you can improve your processing and understanding of the information you just read.
  • Jog Your Memory – Whether you’re preparing for a presentation or a test, highlighting specific keywords will help you remember essential information.

Fun Fact: The highlighter was invented in 1963 by Massachusetts print-media giant Carter’s Ink. At the time, it was called the Hi-Liter. (2)
