Oh, that sinking feeling you get when you’re away from home and the battery on your electronic device is running low. If your first thought is to use a public USB charging station to power back up, you might want to think again. In mid-April, the Federal Communications Commission (FCC) issued a warning about the dangers of “juicing” up electronic devices with free USB port charging stations like you might find in airports and hotel lobbies. Turns out these complimentary charging locations provide criminals yet another way to steal your personal info.
According to NPR, the term “juice jacking” was first coined in 2011 by cybersecurity analyst Brian Krebs. It refers to the attempt to hack into phones to either steal data while they are charging or infect them with malware that criminals use to access personal data and passwords and ultimately your online accounts. The FCC reports that criminals may even leave infected cables plugged in at charging stations as another ploy to lure unsuspecting victims.
One way to avoid getting juice jacked is to carry your own tech accessories when traveling. These handy on-the-go companions won’t just keep you powered up, they may also play an important role in keeping your data secure.
